| A Culture Of Kindness | | | I just returned from a trip with my family to Costa Rica, a
wonderful country with great ecological and cultural
diversity and natural beauty. I want to share an incident
which gave me some great perspective about living a
purposeful life. We had rented a car for our trip and on the very first
day as we headed out to view a waterfall garden near
the city of San Jose, the car broke down in a small town.
Within a few minutes, some residents of the town saw
what had happened and offered to help us. One man in
particular went to a nearby garage and brought us a
battery. The battery wasn't the problem and we called
the rent a car company to come and replace the car. In
any event, this man stayed with us for over 2 hours
communicating with us in Spanish. He didn't speak any
English. I did my best with my High School Spanish and
Berlitz phrase book. We were able to communicate, but
it wasn't the language that was important. What struck
me was this man's warmth and genuine desire to help us.
When the rent a car people finally came, I offered this
man some money for his kindness but he didn't want any.
He was simply happy to be of service to us. During the rest of the trip I found a genuine warmth from
all the people I encountered. I realized that what was
important to these people were relationships and the
nurturing of community. When I returned home, I thought
more about the ideal of a culture where kindness is
passed on from one person to the next. I was touched
by what I saw and I believe that genuine human
connection is what we most want and what we will most
remember about our lives. This tapestry of human
warmth is what will give sustanance to everything else
we strive to do and accomplish with our life. Without it,
all the money, fame or external signs of success are just
a pale substitute for the depth and potential of the
human heart.
